The rumors about a film adaptation of Elden Ring are true. Alex Garland and Studio A24 are joining forces to make it happen.

Video game adaptations are currently proving once again that they can be really lucrative. Following Super Mario Bros. and The Minecraft Movie, an adaptation of Elden Ring is now coming to the big screen. And they”ve already found a director and screenwriter.

From sci-fi to fantasy

Both roles will be taken on byAlex Garland, who isn”t exactly known for fantasy at the moment. Quite the opposite, in fact: Garland has made a name for himself primarily with sci-fi and, more recently, action films. His repertoire includes Dredd, Ex Machina, Annihilation, Civil War, and most recently Warfare.

He also worked with Danny Boyle on the cult zombie film 28 Days Later, which will be followed by 28 Years Later on June 19, 2025. The new installment will even kick off a whole trilogy.

The director himself is a huge fan of Elden Ring

Garland himself is also a big fan of Elden Ring. Just a month ago, the director and screenwriter revealed on Reddit that he simply can”t stop playing FromSoftware”s Soulslike game.

At that point, Garland said he was on his sixth playthrough and had long since lost track of how many hours he had spent playing. Could this mean he”s eagerly awaiting the release of Nightreign?

It is currently unknown when exactly Alex Garland will bring Elden Ring to the big screen. The studio responsible for production is A24, known for films and series such as Everything Everywhere All At Once, Uncut Gems, Midsommar, Moonlight, and Euphoria.

The news has been met with mixed feelings by fans. For example, there are already jokes about whether the film adaptation of Elden Ring will be similar to Minecraft. A month ago, when rumors about the video game adaptation were still circulating, this (fantastic) meme made the rounds.

Others are confident because Alex Garland has rarely, if ever, disappointed with his productions. And the fact that the director and screenwriter himself is a big fan of Elden Ring is, of course, a small bonus.
