No one from Ubisoft has said it yet, but our eagle eyes and lynx ears have not failed to notice an important detail.

A game set in ancient Rome, but without well-trained legionnaires? That’s inconceivable! After all, the military was an enormously important pillar of this historic empire. Not only in times of crisis, but also in times of peace.

But at Anno 117: Pax Romana the developers continue to keep a very low profile on this matter. In the predecessor, there were no land units, after all, with the focus instead on naval warfare. But the evidence is mountingthat Ubisoft is now returning to land battles.

Recently, there was new gameplay in a video at the IGN Fan Fest and here there was one detail to see and one detail to hear that in our eyes land battles are almost guaranteed. The team shared even more new info!

There are legionnaires in the game

In the video at the IGN Fan Fest, Game Director Manuel Reinher from Ubisoft Mainz talks about the innovations in Anno 117, while gameplay can be seen at the same time. Actually, it’s only about the story and the new modular ships, but there are even more interesting details to see in the gameplay.

In one scene, we see Stonehenge, where some kind of festival or ritual is taking place. We also see all sorts of inhabitants roaming around. But more exciting than the little people are the little people with helmets. Legionnaires have lined up all around the stone circle Some of them are even sitting on horses:

It seems to be a cutscene and we don’t see any active fighting here, but nevertheless, all this is game graphics. So the legionnaires visible here are definitely real assets, models built for the game.

They could just be an atmospheric detail, but it is more likely that these in-game models will become relevant to gameplay in some way. This is supported by yet more new information.

There are walls Manuel Reinher presents the modular ships that we can assemble ourselves in Anno 117 in the video. One of these modules is a catapult. According to Reinher, ships with such catapults can damage other ships, towers and walls. Towers or ships are clear, after all, port facilities must be able to defend themselves somehow – but walls? That’s unusual and wasn’t present in Anno 1800 either. Unless Reinher is talking about flat quay walls here, it must actually be real city walls. However, such walls are rarely built to defend a harbor. Normally, walls serve to ward off danger from the land side. So if we can build walls, land battles are more than likely.

Currently, Ubisoft is releasing more and more concrete information about Anno 117. We already knew a lot at the reveal, but not everything. Of course, we will keep you up to date on such an important topic and collect all new information in News and Preview. You can find some of it in the article box above this paragraph.
