The PS5 and Xbox Series don’t even add up to the sales success of the Switch

The Nintendo Switch celebrates its next success in Japan and secures first place in the ranking of the best-selling consoles in its home market.

Why this is important:While it feels like the entire gaming world is waiting for the successor, the first Switch generation continues to sell extremely well.

So it’s hardly surprising that Nintendo is taking its time with the Switch 2.

In detail: On X/Twitter, the “Game Data Library” account regularly evaluates the sales figures for consoles and games on the Japanese market.

  • In the past few days, the Nintendo Switch has reached the 32.9 million unit mark, making it the best-selling console in Japan.
  • This puts the console just ahead of another Nintendo product: the Nintendo DS has sold 32.88 million units since its release in 2004.
  • The lead is likely to be extended further in the coming months, as the Nintendo DS has not been on sale for years – unlike the Switch.

What are the sales figures worldwide? The above figures relate exclusively to Japan. Worldwide, the Nintendo Switch is still lagging behind.

  • According to the data portalVGChartzthe Switch console is the third best-selling device worldwide.
  • The Nintendo product secured the bronze medal with 139.68 million units sold; the Nintendo DS, on the other hand, is stuck in second place with 154.02 million consoles sold.
  • The undisputed king here is still the PlayStation 2, of which Sony sold 158.7 million units worldwide during its cycle.

The current console generationaround the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S is still a long way fromsuch fabulous figures.

  • The current Sony console is currently in 15th place in the global ranking with 57.66 million units sold.
  • Microsoft’s competitor, on the other hand, is far behind. Both Xbox series models together are only in 20th place with 28.37 million consoles sold.
