The hackers threaten to sell the stolen data.

This is not the first time Sony has been the target of hackers. In 2015, criminals from Russia gained access to Sony Pictures, in 2018 a North Korean was charged regarding a 2014 hack. Not to mention the 2011 hack of the PlayStation Network.

A consortium of hackers now claims to have hacked into all of Sony’s systems.

This is the current state

A ransomware group is boasting that it stole data from Sony and threatening to sell it if the company refuses to pay (via The Gamer).

Officially, the attack has not been verified yet, but it is reported that the said group is known to have already stolen data from other victims. Moreover, they are said to provide apparent evidence that the hack took place, reports (Video Games Chronicle).

So far, Sony has yet to comment on the incident.

Furthermore, it is not clear whether the allegedly stolen data is business information, users’ personal information, or both.

How likely is the statement?

The testimony of the group called “Ransomed.vc” reads as follows on their website:

We have successfully compromised [sic] all of Sony’s systems. We will not ask for a ransom! We will sell the data. Because Sony doesn’t want to pay. THE DATA IS FOR SALE […] WE WILL SELL IT.

The alleged hack was first documented by (Cyber Security Connect) . They describe Ransomed.vc as a newcomer to the scene, but one that already has an impressive number of victims

Cyber Security Connect, however, at the same time does not assume that all Sony systems have been hacked, citing the relatively small size of the data for sale.

None of the data has been released yet, and it remains to be seen if Ransomed.vc was able to gain access to Sony at all. If you are concerned about the security of your own data in general, we have nine tricks for you to improve your passwords and prevent strangers from accessing your data.
