Austrian publisher THQ Nordic has announced that the first installment of the popular classic RPG “Gothic” is getting a port for the Nintendo Switch. The game will be available as “Gothic Classic” on the handheld console. Unlike a remaster or remake, the game’s original code remains mostly unchanged, but has been adapted for the Switch.

This is how Gothic will be ported to the Switch

The port to the Nintendo Switch will now allow players to enjoy the Gothic experience on a handheld console for the first time. Starting on September 28, 2023, we can once again, or for the first time, take on the role of a convicted prisoner who must mine ore in a penal colony to make weapons for a war. Escaping from this brutal environment requires skillful action and forging alliances.

Aside from some adjustments to the AI, story, world, and textures, however, most of the original gritty RPG adventure remains intact. The Nintendo Switch version opens up the possibility for players to take the dark world of Gothic with them wherever they go and rediscover the fascination of this classic. Another success for the preservation of video game history!
